Introduction

It is essential that nurses use the best current practice when caring for patients. These practices are usually determined through critically reading research studies. However, evaluating research studies can be quite daunting for RN-to-BSN students. A systematic approach  will help a novice reader become proficient in critiquing a quantitative research article  (Coughlan, 2007).

Objective

Upon completion of this course, the RN-to-BSN students will be able to:
  1. Analyze quantitative studies.
  2. Use the Critical Review Form developed by McMaster University as a tool or guide to critique quantitative studies effectively.
  3. Identify the methods and designs used in a quantitative study.
  4. Interpret results that are statistically significant.
  5. Identify biases in a quantitative study.
